Elephant Donkey Ceramic Decanter Pair Political Republican Democrat Cork Bottles

Two ceramic decanters, one an elephant and one a donkey, modelled as flattened flasks in a pale grey glaze with a concentric spiral on the flank and cork stoppers in the neck.  Sold as a pair because they were designed as one. The elephant and the donkey are the Republican and the Democrat, and putting the two of them on a sideboard with whiskey in them is a very specific American joke about hospitality: whoever comes to dinner, there is a bottle for them.  Neither animal was chosen by its party. Thomas Nast, the cartoonist, drew the Democratic donkey in Harper's Weekly in 1870 and the Republican elephant in 1874, and the parties adopted the insults. The donkey started as a slur against Andrew Jackson, who liked it enough to put it on his campaign material. That is the whole origin of both symbols: a cartoonist in New York, with no consultation.  Both corks are here. On decanters like these the stopper is lost first and the bottle becomes a vase.  Condition: Two decanters, photographed together and separately. No chips or cracks found on either, including the trunk, ears and muzzle. Both cork stoppers are present and seat correctly. Glaze is clean with light crazing. Interiors are dry.
